Acid Reflux and Asthma

Is there a Link between Acid Reflux and Asthma?

When stomach acid travels into your esophagus, small particles of acid may be inhaled into your lungs increasing your asthma symptoms. The gastric acid will irritate the pulmonary lining and cause spasms in the airways.

The esophageal lining may be damaged due to the acid being exposed to some parts of the nerves that are connected to the lungs. When these nerves are irritated, it sets off the constriction of airways.

People who suffer with asthma acquire acid reflux more often than people without asthma. This is due to the coughing and sneezing associated with asthmatic attacks. As a result this will cause a change in pressure in the chest which triggers acid reflux.

The medications that treat asthma expand the airways. When this happens the lower esophageal sphincter will become relaxed allowing stomach acid to travel up to the esophagus.

Is There A Way To Tell If Acid Reflux Is Causing Asthma?

If you suffer with asthma, then you may realize that your asthma attacks are connected to acid reflux if your asthma started around adulthood.
